Chiens refers to a group of very small islets within a remote atoll system in the Seychelles. These are low-lying landmasses consisting mainly of sand, coral debris, and flat rock formations, and are permanently uninhabited.
The islands serve no infrastructural function and have no facilities whatsoever. Their relevance stems from their location within the atoll. They mark the edges of lagoons, reef zones, or shallow transitions to the open sea, thus serving to clearly define the geographical boundaries of the atoll.
Ecologically, the chiens are part of a sensitive marine system. They influence local currents and sediment movements, and provide refuge for seabirds as well as habitats for marine organisms in the adjacent reef. There is no targeted human use of them.
For travelers, the Chiens play no practical role as a destination. They are inaccessible and not visited by ships. However, they are relevant in an island guide because they illustrate how intricately structured and complex the atoll landscape of the outer Seychelles is, and how many named points on the islands serve solely for orientation and nature conservation.
