Thérèse's rugged sister and a strictly protected bird paradise
Anyone looking out at the ocean from Mahé's west coast (for example, from Port Launay or Grand Anse) will see not only the distinctive cone of Thérèse Island, but also another island directly behind or beside it: Conception. The two islands are often considered contrasting sisters. While Thérèse attracts visitors with sandy beaches and barbecue excursions, Conception is a wild, inaccessible, and rugged fortress of nature.
Conception Island is uninhabited today and an extremely important nature reserve. Anyone approaching this island immediately senses the untamed power of the Indian Ocean and the pristine nature of a place where wildlife reigns supreme.
An Ark project: Saving the Seychelles white-eye
The absolute highlight of Conception Island is often not visible to the naked eye from a boat. The island is one of the most important sites for species conservation in the Seychelles.
Saving from extinction: For a long time, the tiny Seychelles white-eye was thought to be almost extinct. When a small remnant population was discovered, some birds were relocated to Conception Island, as there are no introduced predators such as rats there.
A thriving reserve: The project was a resounding success! Today, Conception Island is home to one of the largest and healthiest populations of this rare bird. The endemic Seychelles kestrel and countless seabirds also use the island's dense treetops as a safe nesting site.
Rugged cliffs instead of flat, dreamy beaches
If you're looking for a classic inflatable island, Conception is the wrong place for you, and that's precisely what makes it so appealing.
Steep and inaccessible: The island rises almost vertically from the ocean, just over 130 meters high. There are no wide sandy beaches here, but rather massive, jagged granite cliffs against which the waves crash. Landing a boat is very difficult and often dangerous, which is why the island is generally not visited by day-trippers.
Pure nature: There used to be a coconut plantation here, but today the jungle has reclaimed every square meter of the island. The dense vegetation clings tenaciously to the steep slopes.
A dramatic underwater world for experienced divers
What Conception lacks above water in terms of beaches, it makes up for underwater with its spectacular topography.
Steep walls and currents: The island's rugged cliffs continue beneath the water's surface. Due to its somewhat exposed location off the west coast, stronger currents are common here. This attracts not only colorful reef fish but also larger pelagic predators.
Big fish territory: For experienced divers, the reef around Conception is a hidden gem. Here you have excellent chances of encountering reef sharks, majestic eagle rays, schools of barracuda, and sometimes even hunting tuna. A real contrast to the tranquil lagoon dives!
The bottom line: Conception Island is an island to admire, not to settle. It's a green bastion of nature conservation and proof of how important such inaccessible refuges are for endangered species. A boat trip along Mahé's west coast offers spectacular, wild photo opportunities and fantastic, adventurous dive sites!
