Petite Soeur

Even upon closer approach, everything appears concentrated. The island belongs to the group of inner islands and, as a subsidiary island, is an integral part of the geographical structure of the Seychelles.

The rugged jewel and a top-class underwater aquarium

Just a few kilometers north of La Digue, two striking granite islands rise from the ocean: the "Sister Islands". While the larger sister (Grande Soeur) often steals the spotlight with its soft sandy beaches, Petite Soeur (the little sister) is the wild, untamed rebel of the two.

Petite Soeur is rocky, steep, and densely overgrown. Because it is so difficult to access, it harbors one of the best-kept secrets of the inner Seychelles: an underwater world that even experienced divers and snorkelers rave about!

The real highlight lies beneath the water's surface.

Since the coast of Petite Soeur is heavily rocky and has hardly any beaches, mooring a boat is often difficult. But that's a blessing for nature! Life here doesn't take place on a towel, but in the water.

  • An intact coral reef: The water around the island is usually surprisingly calm thanks to the reef (especially during the transitional months of April/May and October/November). As soon as you slip into the water with your mask and snorkel, you'll find yourself in a gigantic open-air aquarium.

  • Unique encounters await: The reef at Petite Soeur is renowned for its immense abundance of fish. Here you'll swim through dense schools of colorful reef fish, discover majestic rays gliding across the seabed, and have an extremely high probability of encountering peaceful sea turtles. With a bit of luck, you might even spot harmless reef sharks!

Rugged beauty in private hands

Although the island is small (only about 0.34 square kilometers), it impresses with its dramatic topography.

  • Steep cliffs and dense jungle: The island is of volcanic and granitic origin. Its highest point rises over 100 meters vertically. The deep green, almost impenetrable vegetation forms a magnificent contrast to the reddish-brown and gray granite rocks that plunge directly into the turquoise sea.

  • Exclusive access: Petite Soeur is uninhabited and privately owned (managed by the luxury hotel Château de Feuilles on Praslin). Access to the island is therefore strictly regulated and often reserved for hotel guests or special tours. But don't worry: the best way to experience the island's charm is directly from a boat and in the surrounding waters!

The perfect day trip from La Digue or Praslin

The best way to visit Petite Soeur is not in isolation, but as part of a fantastic island-hopping trip.

  • The "Sister, Coco & Félicité" tour: Most local boat operators on La Digue or Praslin offer this classic combination. You start in the morning, anchor off Petite Soeur for an extensive snorkeling session, continue to the picture-perfect reef of Coco Island, and then relax with a barbecue on the idyllic beaches of Grande Soeur or Félicité. A day that feels like stepping right into a postcard!

The bottom line: Petite Soeur isn't a place for hours of sunbathing, but rather an absolute adventure playground for water lovers. Anyone wanting to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Indian Ocean undisturbed in exceptionally clear water should definitely make sure that a snorkeling stop at this fascinating little island is included in their boat trip itinerary.
