The mysterious jungle island with a "Jurassic Park" feel
If you stand on Mahé's northwest coast (at Beau Vallon beach) and look out at the ocean, you'll see a massive, emerald-green pyramid rising from the water on the horizon. That's Silhouette, the third largest but least developed of the inner Seychelles islands.
Just a 45-minute boat ride from Mahé, you'll enter a completely different world. Silhouette is wild, dramatic, and so pristine that you almost expect a dinosaur to burst from the dense ferns at any moment. Anyone seeking untouched nature, absolute seclusion, and spectacular hikes will love this island!
A national park in the ocean: jungle, cloud forest and giant bats
Silhouette is a true triumph of nature conservation. Over 90 percent of the island's surface is protected as a national park, and there are neither paved roads nor cars.
The mystical Mont Dauban: At 740 meters high, this mountain peak towers over the island and is often shrouded in mysterious clouds. The dense, pristine rainforest is home to rare plant and animal species, some of which exist only here, including incredibly rare carnivorous pitcher plants and the giant Seychelles fruit bats, which glide majestically across the sky in the evenings.
Hiking for adventurers: On Silhouette, you don't just sunbathe, you explore! The hike to Anse Mondon takes you past gigantic granite boulders and ancient trees to a hidden, idyllic swimming cove. For hardcore hikers, there's the challenging trail to Grand Barbe on the other side of the island, a wild, deserted beach that's an important nesting site for sea turtles.
The beaches: white sand and a protective marine reserve
Because the island is of volcanic origin (combined with granite) and rises steeply from the sea, the beaches here are different, but no less spectacular than on the sister islands.
La Passe, the arrival point: The nearly two-kilometer-long main beach of La Passe is a true dream. A protective reef ensures that the water here slopes gently and shimmers in the most magnificent shades of blue. The perfect place to sway in a hammock and let your mind wander.
An untouched underwater world: The sea around Silhouette is also a strictly protected marine park. This means that diving and snorkeling here is absolutely world-class! The reefs are incredibly pristine, and the chances of encountering reef sharks, eagle rays, and huge schools of fish are particularly high.
History meets eco-luxury: The Dauban family legacy
Although Silhouette is so wild, it has a fascinating history and offers a touch of luxury at the same time.
Ghosts of the past: In the 19th and 20th centuries, the island belonged to the influential French Dauban family, who cultivated coconuts and vanilla here. Their old, magnificent plantation house, Grann Kaz , still stands today and serves as a Creole restaurant. A short walk will also take you to the historic Dauban mausoleum, which is almost eerie, yet beautiful, nestled in the middle of the forest.
Exclusive stay: There's only one large resort (the Hilton Seychelles Labriz ) and a tiny guesthouse on the entire island. The resort blends so perfectly into the jungle and onto the beach that nature takes center stage. You'll share the island with just a handful of other guests and the approximately 100 locals who live in the small island village.
The verdict: Silhouette is the ultimate destination for nature lovers, honeymooners, and anyone wanting to completely escape the rest of the world for a while. The island offers the perfect balance between exhilarating jungle adventures in the morning and luxurious relaxation on a dream beach in the afternoon.
