Cerf Island Mahé

Only a short boat ride separates this place from everyday life on the main island. The island belongs to the group of inner islands and, as a subsidiary island, is an integral part of the geographical structure of the Seychelles.

The whispering oasis of calm right outside the gates of Mahé

Anyone standing at the Eden Island marina on Mahé and gazing out at the deep blue ocean will see it almost within reach: Cerf Island. Located just under four kilometers off the northeast coast of the main island, it forms the heart of the fascinating Sainte Anne Marine National Park.

The contrast couldn't be greater: While buses and cars circulate on Mahé, there is n't a single paved road or car on Cerf Island. Anyone who sets foot on this lush green island immediately leaves the noise of the world behind and enters a paradise of absolute silence, rustling palm fronds, and the gentle lapping of the waves.

An island for explorers: jungle trails and Robinson Crusoe feeling

Cerf Island (named after the French frigate Le Cerf , which arrived here in 1756) is only about 1.5 kilometers long and just under a kilometer wide. Nevertheless, there is quite a bit to discover here.

  • Barefoot through the jungle: Instead of roads, there are only two narrow jungle paths that crisscross the island. As you set off, you'll hike through dense, exotic vegetation, past fragrant cinnamon trees and gigantic granite boulders.

  • Animal encounters: The island is a true paradise for nature lovers. Fruit bats live in the lush greenery, gliding majestically across the sky in the evenings, and of course you'll also encounter the gentle Aldabra giant tortoises resting peacefully in the shade.

The ultimate water adventure: Snorkeling in the Marine Park

Since Cerf Island is located directly within the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, the underwater world around the island is strictly protected, and you notice that immediately!

  • Straight from the beach to the reef: You don't need to book a boat tour here to enjoy fantastic snorkeling. The coral reef is practically right on the beach's doorstep. Put on your mask, glide into the shallow water, and discover colorful parrotfish, batfish, and elegant eagle rays.

  • Kayak tours and hidden coves: Because the water is extremely calm due to the reef, the coast around Cerf is perfect for extended kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding trips. Discover small, deserted coves where you can enjoy the sun undisturbed, or paddle over to the tiny neighboring islands of Moyenne or Long Island.

Exclusive boutique holiday overlooking Mahé

Unlike some other islands in the Marine Park, Cerf Island is inhabited, albeit by very few people.

  • Intimate hideaways: There are no huge hotel complexes here, but only a small handful of exquisite boutique hotels, eco-resorts, and cozy guesthouses. These nestle so discreetly into the hillside and the forest that they are barely noticeable from the water.

  • The best of both worlds: The brilliant thing about Cerf Island is its location. You enjoy the absolute isolation and tranquility of a private island, but (thanks to the free boat transfer offered by many accommodations) you can be back on Mahé in just 10 to 15 minutes to stroll through the market in Victoria or take an excursion.

The verdict: Cerf Island is an absolute insider tip for couples, honeymooners, and those seeking tranquility who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the main island without having to endure long transfer times. A peaceful, wonderfully unhurried paradise that delights with its pristine underwater world and authentic barefoot luxury.
